Why so many Whale Sharks in Mexico?

Whale Sharks visit the Mexican Caribbean during Summertime in order to feed on plankton that floats near the surface. This presents a unique opportunity to see these beautiful creatures up close in their natural habitat.

  • The whale shark inhabits all tropical and warm-temperate seas. The fish is primarily pelagic, living in the open sea.
  • Seasonal feeding aggregations occur at northeastern parts of Isla Mujeres and Isla Contoy during the summer.
  • These gentle giants are harmless to humans (and not interested in meat).
  • They are slow swimmers in relation to their massive size, moving along at approximately 5 k/h (3 m/h).
  • Whale Sharks are not considered part of the mammal class, that is why it is considered the largest shark on the planet.

It only takes a 45 minute boat ride from Isla Mujeres to get to the feeding area or 60 minutes departing from the marina at Punta Sam.

  • Your very own comfortable private boat (30ft speed boats).
